Discreet Protection: How to Blend OPTEX Sensors into Your Environment

23 March 2026

Designing a security system is about more than simply installing sensors: it’s about integrating protection into a space without compromising its aesthetics. Architects, installers, and system integrators know that a highly visible sensor can disrupt the balance of a carefully designed project.

OPTEX addresses this challenge by offering solutions to customise sensors, making them discreet and perfectly harmonised with their surroundings.

Sensors That Blend In

In many cases, clients want devices to “disappear” from view without sacrificing performance. With OPTEX’s custom painting service, it is possible to:

  • choose the sensor colour to match the environment
  • apply solid colours or patterns that replicate real materials (wood, marble, stone, carbon fibre…)
  • fully integrate the sensor into the architectural context

The result? A security system that is effective yet visually discreet, ideal for luxury homes, modern offices, or historic buildings.

Which Sensors Can Be Customised

Customisation is available for a wide range of devices, including REDSCAN sensors featuring LiDAR technology and outdoor sensors such as those in the BXS, VXS and WXS series.

For those seeking ready-to-use, fully discreet solutions, the BXS and VXS models are available in completely black versions, perfect for modern and minimalist

How Customisation Works

The customisation process is far more sophisticated than simple painting.

Only the external plastic housing is treated, while certain parts (particularly those near the lens) remain untouched to ensure proper operation.

The sensor can then be:

  • a solid colour
  • patterned to replicate real surfaces
  • seamlessly integrated with the background

It is important not to attempt DIY painting, as non-professional finishes can impair functionality and void the warranty.

Why DIY Painting Should Be Avoided

It might seem simple to grab a spray can and paint a sensor yourself. In reality, this is one of the riskiest approaches.

Non-professional painting can:

  • cover the lens
  • block air vents
  • reduce performance
  • void the warranty

For this reason, OPTEX strongly recommends using only the official custom painting service.

When Customisation Is Not Recommended

Not all devices can be modified.

For example, IR beams and perimeter towers use materials with special treatments, such as UV protection. Painting these could compromise their properties and reduce performance.

It is always advisable to check with your distributor or directly with OPTEX to confirm whether the model is suitable for customisation.

Quick Alternatives: BX and VX Shield

The BX Shield and VX Shield series offer modular solutions for those seeking immediate aesthetic integration without full custom painting:

  • white or black base
  • white, black, or silver covers

combinations of colours on the body and front plate

A simple and flexible solution for projects where time or budget does not allow full customisation.
