Why intrusion detection still matters in an ever-changing security landscape

3 November 2025

Despite rapid advances in surveillance, analytics, and automation, intrusion detection remains one of the most critical and misunderstood elements of modern security systems. In a world where threats are more adaptive and data driven than ever, understanding how and why intrusions occur is key to designing protection that not only reacts to threats, but anticipates them.

To explore this evolving landscape, three OPTEX security specialists: Mathew Oakley – Project Sales Manager for the UK and Ireland, Eelko Griepink – Regional Sales Manager for Benelux and the Nordics, and Rick Wakeham – Senior Technology Manager, share their insights on today’s motivations, methods, and misconceptions surrounding intrusion detection.

And what are the key steps to make detection work effectively?

Eelko Griepink – At OPTEX we advocate the design and implementation of a multi-layered security system that combines multiple technologies and systems. There is no single technology available that can provide a complete solution. Integration and automation are also key. Detection data must flow seamlessly into the monitoring or command platform. When a threat is recognised, the system shouldn’t just raise an alarm, it should trigger an intelligent workflow: pull up camera feeds, lock gates, and alert the right people. The goal is to shorten the window between detection and decision.

For instance, our sensors use intelligent detection algorithms to process data and eliminate noise without using any predictive elements to reduce processing time and improve reliability.

Smarter detection for a smarter response

From opportunistic thefts to targeted break ins, intrusion detection remains a vital, evolving part of the modern security ecosystem. When combined with deterrence, surveillance, and access control and powered by intelligent integration, detection becomes not just a response tool, but a predictive intelligence layer.

At OPTEX, we believe smarter detection means understanding not just what is happening, but why. Because when intent is visible, prevention becomes possible.

'Blue Dots'perimeter security

Based upon a multi-layer philosophy OPTEX's aim is to create detection for every vulnerable area. Whether this be security large critical infrastructure to protecting your home from opportunistic burglars, OPTEX have a solution to meet your requirements.
