The OPTEX WX series includes the WX Infinity (WXI) and WX Shield (WXS) outdoor PIR detection sensors. These sensors provide two independent left-right detection areas up to 12m each (24m in total) with separate sensitivity and range adjustment, enabling the detector to adapt to the areas of interest reducing nuisance alarms.

Step 1 – Setting the correct mounting height

The choice of mount height may vary depending the model of WX series being installed. It is important to check the model being installed and select the mounting height most suitable for the site.

For the WX Infinity (WXI-ST, WXI-AM, WXI-R, WXI-RAM), a mounting height of between 0.8m to 1.2m.1m is recommended.

For the WX Shield (WXS-AM, WSX-DAM, WXS-RAM, WXS-RDAM), there is slightly more flexibility as these models can be installed in either a low or high mount.
A low mount would be a mounting height of between 0.8m to 1.2m, whereas a high mount has a fixed installation height of 2m.

Once the mount height is chosen, it is important to set the detector setting to the correct mount height.

Use the blue handle in the middle of the upper sensors to pull up or push down the front frame to reveal the mount height setting, “HIGH MNT” or “LOW MNT” will be visible to indicate the current detector mount setting.

Step 2 - Wall Mount or Pole Mount

The sensor can be mounted either on walls or poles. The sensor's back plate is fitted with a leveling indicator to aid in mounting the detection sensor level.

To ensure the detector remains weather resistant it is important that you use the screws provided as well as the rubber seals in the punch hole location for pole mount or the ready screw holes for wall mount. Do not drill other holes in the back plate for mounting purposes. Be sure you use the rubber plug to seal off screw holes when wall-mounted.

Step 3 – Area Masking

WXS detectors have left and right area shutter, adjust these shutters to mask off areas where detections are not required.

Also, included in the box are area masking plates which may be fitted to mask areas in the middle of the detection zone.

Step 4 – Adjusting the sensor settings

Wxs wxi tech tip dip switches

Configurable elements in WX series are easily recognisable as they are all in blue.

Using the DIP switches you can adjust the settings to suit the detection requirements. Please take special note with DIP switches 3, 9 and 10 relating to the individual adjustments for left/right sides of the detection:

  • It is important to consider if the left and right detection zones will output as a single alert output or separately and set DIP switch ❸ accordingly.
  • For dual tech models with microwave, when the detection range is adjusted, the microwave detection range will need to be changed in DIP switches ❾ and ❿.

DIP switches

❶LED

ON: LED is activated according to the sensors status.

OFF: LED is not activated except during warm-up and walk test.

❷Alarm output type

ON: Alarm (L) and (R) = N.O. (Normally Open)

OFF: Alarm (L) and (R) = N.C. (Normally Closed)

❸Individual outputs

ON: Alarm (L) and (R) output alarm signals individually without affecting each other.

OFF: Alarm (L) and (R) output alarm signals at the same time by either detection alone.

Individual outputs ON/OFF by DIP SW No.3

❹Pulse count

ON: Pulse count setting = 1

OFF: Pulse count setting = 2

❺PIR immunity

ON: Immunity

OFF: Normal

‘Immunity’ is used under harsh environments, ‘Normal’ is used under standard conditions.

❻Battery saving timer

ON: timer period = Five seconds

OFF: timer period = Two minutes

Even if there are continuous alarm events, the alarm is generated only once in the timer period to save the battery life.

❼Day/Night

ON: Night only

OFF: Day and Night

Alarms output only when ambient illuminance becomes dark by switching to ‘Night only’.

Alarms output any time by detecting in ‘Day and Night’.

❽Anti-masking

ON: Anti-masking ON

OFF: Anti-masking OFF

When masking condition continues for more than three minutes, a ‘Trouble’ warning will be generated. Trouble is generated after 20 seconds under the anti-masking test mode.

Depending on the model use these dip switches to customise the detector performance to best suit the site.

Notable settings are PIR sensitivity and detection range

❾Microwave range (Left)

❿Microwave range (Right)

ON: Long

OFF: Short

Switch the microwave detection distance to ‘Long’ and ‘Short’.

Long: low mount 12m; high mount 9m

Short: low mount 9m; high mount 6m

⓫Microwave immunity

ON: Immunity

OFF: Normal

‘Immunity’ is used under harsh environments, ‘Normal’ is used under standard conditions.

Step 5 – Walk Test

When the front cover is closed the WXS detector will automatically switch to walk test mode for three minutes. During this test, the sensors LED will come on for two seconds when an object is detected. The LED will blink for five seconds at the end of the automatic walk test and the sensor will back to normal operation mode.

Following the walk test, make any adjustments as required and repeat if necessary.
