Improved building accessibility for elderly and disabled people

A recently constructed residential building in The Netherlands wasn’t accommodating its older and disabled residents by limiting their freedom of movement and self-reliance.

The newly constructed apartment complex for senior citizens faced accessibility challenges, especially with heavy manually operated swing doors at the entrance and internally that were difficult for residents with physical limitations to open. This created a reliance on others for assistance and sometimes confined residents indoors. A prompt solution with automated doors and compliance to safety standards was urgently required.

PROBLEM

The manually operated doors created significant challenges, especially for those with limited movement or strength. Wheelchair-bound residents found it difficult to open the doors, restricting her ability to go outside independently. The need for help from others, often arranged through a communication app, highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue. According to Louiz van den Beek of Isidoor Service, this is a common problem, especially when developers opt for "low cost" solutions.
