Grading of Active Infrared Beams under PD 6662:2017 (NSI Concession)

One of the most frequently asked questions in the security industry concerns the grading of active infrared beams for compliance with PD 6662:2017. The NSI Notification on Concession AIR provides guidance on this matter, addressing the challenge of obtaining beams that meet TS 50131-2-9 requirements.

Key Points of the Concession:

  • A temporary concession allows the use of beams with a manufacturer’s claim of compliance to BS 4737-3.12:1978.
  • These beams must also meet the general requirements of BS EN 50131-1 and BS EN 50130-5.
  • Manufacturers must issue a statement of suitability confirming compliance for Grade N and Environmental Class Y systems under PD 6662:2017.
  • Important: Reflector-type beam sets (using a single unit with a reflector instead of separate transmitter and receiver units) must not be used in PD 6662:2017-compliant systems.
  • Note: OPTEX currently does not have reflector-type beams in its product portfolio.

OPTEX Compliance and Certification

The OPTEX Certificate of Conformity (QDC23033) confirms that a range of photobeam detectors comply with PD 6662:2017 – Active Infrared Beams (Concession).

  • These devices adhere to BS 4737-3.12:1978 under the temporary concession, and the certificate includes a listing of compliant models.

Practical Considerations for Installers & Specifiers:

  • Ensure that any photobeam detectors used under this concession have a manufacturer-issued statement of suitability.
  • Verify that the beam model is listed on the Certificate of Conformity for PD 6662:2017 compliance.
  • Avoid the use of reflector-type beams in security systems requiring PD 6662:2017 grading.
    • OPTEX currently does not have these beams in its product portfolio.
  • Stay updated on any changes to TS 50131-2-9 compliance requirements as the concession is temporary.
