ENHANCING DETECTION - Selecting the right REDSCAN LiDAR sensors for your security needs

22 January 2026

At the heart of every OPTEX REDSCAN LiDAR sensor is a simple principle – accurate intrusion detection comes from understanding where an object is, how large it is, and how it moves. By measuring distance and position rather than relying solely on motion, LiDAR enables precise detection zones and intelligent filtering of environmental noise. The result is reliable, accurate detection across diverse and challenging environments.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Selecting the right REDSCAN LiDAR depends on the environment, detection range, and the level of integration required. Over the last 17 years, OPTEX has evolved the REDSCAN series to address different security challenges: from long-range perimeter protection to short-range detection in narrow, hard-to-reach areas across critical environments. This article explains how the REDSCAN range fits together and when each model is best suited.

The launch of REDSCAN for perimeter protection

Introduced in 2009, the original REDSCAN RLS‑3060 was the first dedicated 2D LiDAR intrusion detection sensor designed specifically for security applications. By measuring X and Y coordinates across long distances, it enabled installers to create virtual walls and detection zones that followed the perimeter itself rather than the physical mounting surface.

Precision and Intelligence LiDAR’s role in modern security ecosystems

| Understanding which REDSCAN model is right

OPTEX’s introduction of LiDAR for security applications transformed the reliability and accuracy of detection systems. Each model was developed to solve a specific security challenge and together, the portfolio supports a broad range of security applications, from long-range and robust perimeter protection to the smallest and hardest-to-reach spaces.

By understanding the strengths of each model, security installers and designers can match the technology to the environment and operational requirements, risk profile and integration needs of the site, helping to ensure reliable and accurate detection without compromise.

Whether protecting large outdoor perimeters, such as airports, critical infrastructure or logistics sites, critical indoor spaces like datacentre racks, or sites requiring visual verification of events, selecting the right REDSCAN model enables security teams to achieve highly accurate, dependable intrusion detection tailored to their specific requirements.
