Strengthening Perimeter Security at a Datacentre

A major datacentre operator faced the growing challenge of securing its site against unauthorised intrusions. The facility was responsible for hosting mission critical data for financial institutions, government organisations, and corporate clients, making it a highly attractive target for both physical and cyber security threats. Existing perimeter protection measures, including fencing and CCTV, were no longer sufficient. Multiple blind spots left sections of the perimeter vulnerable, and the changing environment from poor light, fog, to wildlife moving near the site, led to repeated false alarms. These existing gaps in security and limitations in terms of reliability culminated in a growing lack of confidence among the security team in the system’s ability to deliver the right protection when it was needed most.

Recognising the need for a more robust and intelligent solution, the datacentre operators sought a security technology that could establish a reliable virtual perimeter, work across all conditions, and integrate seamlessly with their existing infrastructure. Following a detailed evaluation of available options, the decision was made to deploy OPTEX’s REDSCAN Pro RLS-50100 LiDAR sensors. Several units were strategically positioned around the site to provide uninterrupted coverage of the entire perimeter.

The REDSCAN Pro’s performance provided immediate advantages. Each sensor provided wide area detection capabilities, allowing long stretches of the perimeter to be covered by fewer devices. Its LiDAR technology created precise virtual walls and planes, detecting even the smallest intrusion attempts with high accuracy. Unlike traditional technologies, the REDSCAN Pro is unaffected by light levels, weather conditions, or temperature changes, ensuring consistent operation day and night. The system was further enhanced by its ability to create customisable detection zones, enabling security managers to configure rules that filtered out irrelevant movements such as small animals.

Crucially, the REDSCAN Pro was integrated directly with the datacentre’s existing CCTV system. This meant that any detected intrusion attempt would automatically trigger the nearest PTZ camera to focus on the incident area, providing instant visual verification for the security team. The combination of accurate detection and a rapid camera response allowed operators to assess the situation in real time and take the necessary action without delay.

The results of the installation were transformative. False alarms were reduced to a minimum, allowing the security team to concentrate their efforts on genuine threats rather than being distracted by nuisance triggers.

By choosing to implement multiple REDSCAN Pro RLS-50100 units, the datacentre strengthened its outer perimeter security while optimising the performance of its existing CCTV system. The solution delivered dependable, intelligent protection that not only increased the overall operational efficiency but also safeguarded the continuity of service for the datacentre’s clients. For the operators, the investment provided reassurance that their facility was equipped with a scalable, layered and future proof detection system capable of adapting to the ever-evolving security demands.
